5 Things That Make It Hard for AI to Understand Your Institution

When prospective students use AI tools to research colleges and programs, they expect accurate, personalized answers.

Those answers depend on how well AI understands your institution.

AI gathers information from your website, third-party directories, news coverage, social platforms, and other trusted sources. When those sources are consistent, AI has greater confidence in the recommendations it generates. But when information is outdated, incomplete, or conflicting, AI has a harder time connecting your institution to the questions prospective students are asking.

Here are five common issues that create what we call classification friction.

1. Outdated Third-Party Profiles

Prospective students aren’t the only ones visiting sites like College Board, Niche, and U.S. News. AI references them, too.

If those profiles haven’t been updated recently, AI may rely on information that’s no longer accurate.

2. Inconsistent Program Names

Does your website call it a Master of Science in Applied Data Analytics while LinkedIn calls it Data Science?

Small differences like these make it harder for AI to recognize they’re describing the same program.

3. Important Information Hidden in PDFs

Program brochures and downloadable PDFs are helpful for prospective students, but they aren’t always easy for AI systems to interpret.

If key details only exist in downloadable documents, they may be overlooked when AI assembles a response.

4. Conflicting Information Across Your Website

Admissions pages, department websites, and microsites often evolve independently.

When deadlines, requirements, or program descriptions don’t match, AI has to decide which version to trust.

5. Missing Structured Data

Schema markup helps search engines and AI understand exactly what a page contains.

Without it, AI has to make more assumptions about your content, increasing the likelihood of errors or missed opportunities.

These are just a few of the issues that contribute to classification friction.
